Replacement stylus for RP range of cartridges

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, we produced a range of moving magnet cartridges – the Russ Andrews RATA RP Series. There were three in the range – the RP20, the RP40 and the RP70. At the time, these cartridges were very well-respected - Jimmy Hughes, writing in What Hi-Fi magazine, compared the top-of-the-range RP70 moving magnet cartridge against two moving coils:

“It was interesting to hear how the RATA stacked up against these two moving coil cartridges. Years ago the differences would have been clear cut, with the moving coil cartridges winning hands down. Yet, as the rating shows, I felt inclined to put the RATA first for sound quality… Compared with the Goldring, I thought the RP70 sounded more colourful and informative, and I felt it bettered the Audio Technica in terms of refinement. So, top marks for the RATA”.

For some time now, we’ve had a number of requests from owners of these RP cartridges wanting to keep them in use and asking us to offer a replacement stylus for them. While it’s not possible for us to have the complete stylus assembly re-manufactured, we have been working with a cartridge specialist to re-tip existing styli. We have tested a particular profile type diamond and are now able to offer this as a replacement stylus for the RP range.

Our listening tests have confirmed that the new design is a significant step up from the previous RP70 design – so much so that we are giving a new name to the stylus – the RP2400. The resulting cartridge has continued to give modern moving coil designs a run for their money, with one listener stating that the cartridge with the new stylus “sounds like a £2000 moving coil”.

How it works

To obtain an RP2400 Styli, you must send your existing stylus to us first. The stylus from any of the RP cartridges can be used (RP20, RP40 and RP70) – they can all be brought up to RP2400 spec. Once received, the stylus will be inspected to check that the cantilever and suspension is in good condition before being re-tipped. If the cantilever and / or suspension need to be replaced, we will contact you first.

Your new Stylus will bear the markings of either RP20, RP40 or RP70
