Why do we upgrade equipment?
Almost any Hi-Fi component can be upgraded to higher performance using our techniques and components. The two things go together – the know-how and the right component. Over the last 25 plus years, we have developed our knowledge of where the biggest problems lie and how to overcome them to unleash better performance from a given piece of equipment.
Quad 606 Power Amp Upgrade
Developed in the late eighties and revised in the early nineties, this hugely popular power amplifier from Quad benefits from the following upgrades to the power amp section. A total of 32 internal component changes, internal wiring and a SuperFuse make this a fantastic upgrade. The upgrade does not bring the 606 up to a 909 specification. It focuses on the strengths of the 606 and builds on them.
Power amp section
32 component upgrades. Upgrades include Kimber Kap capacitors and Russ's favoured audio grade Panasonic capacitors which give a smooth and detailed sound.
We also replace the four primary, reservoir capacitors which in our opinion make a tremendous improvement in sound quality. We replace the fuse in the IEC socket with a SuperFuse, there are also two additional internal fuses that can be upgraded too, just let us know when we book your amp in.
Internal wiring
Internal wiring is taking care of, using Kimber’s excellent all copper wire. For the signal wire, we've used a mixture of Tri-braid PBJ and single wire TCSS. For the power cable, we've used the thicker, all copper TCX wire.
Capacitors
For the majority of the capacitor changes, we use Russ' favoured Panasonic Audio Grade caps. Where possible, we will endeavour to use the superb Kimber Kaps.
Different Model?
If you don't have exactly the same model as listed above, but a very similar unit, then it's highly likely that the same upgrades will apply. But we can't guarantee that until we have the unit here for inspection.
Equipment condition.
It’s important to note that this service is specifically aimed at upgrading equipment in good working condition rather than repairing or servicing. Why? Well, these are two very different processes. Our upgrades look at improving existing parts – like capacitors, for example – and we have an awful lot of knowledge and experience of doing this. As many of these parts do wear over time, replacing them can have the added benefit of actually making the equipment more reliable and longer-lasting, but that is an added bonus rather than the central aim, which is to improve performance.
When it comes to servicing and repair, however, the specific knowledge of individual pieces of equipment that is required, along with access to the original electronic schematics, makes it unwise for anyone other than the manufacturer or authorised service agent to carry out this type of work.
The upgrade comes with a 2 year warranty, including all parts that we've used. This excludes failure of components beyond the work we have carried out. We therefore ask that the equipment you send for upgrade is in good working order.
Please note this is just an upgrade modification, it does not include the Quad amplifier.
